I love that it falls right into my power balls repertoire. And, of course, the recipe falls right into our gluten-free, dairy-free, low-sugar lifestyles – without any “cardboard” taste. You can feel good about having these on hand at all times because there are no added sugars or sweeteners other than from natural fruit and the teeniest bit in the dairy-free dark chocolate chips (which contain less than semisweet and significantly less than milk chocolate). No “natural sweetener” substitutes either. I love this! I know many people are trying to reduce their sugar intake in a healthful way, including me. This fits that lifestyle.

I mentioned easy. This is a “dump” recipe, meaning you simply dump all ingredients into a food processor and pulse until well combined and the mixture easily forms into balls. I like to use a #60 scoop, but little “dough” rounds can be formed with a Tablespoon-size scoopful rolled between the palms of your hands. Easy, right? Yep, I won’t steer you wrong.

I especially like that these little energy bites require no baking. This has two-fold benefits … we’re not heating up our homes during hot summer months, and this healthy snack can be enjoyed immediately. This is a freezer recipe. Merely place the balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze to harden, usually just 10 minutes. Once frozen, transfer the balls to a freezer baggie. They’ll keep for up to three months. I love them frozen, fridge-cooled, and at room temperature.

In fact, I just took a batch with me on a 6-day cross-country car trip (helping my daughter move), packed up in plastic container in my cooler. They were the perfect healthy snack for a quick pick-me-up in the car and on busy move-in day. Two little balls and I was strong and satisfied for hours. You and your kiddos will be too!

Perhaps the best part? While this is a nutritionally sound snack, it tastes like a rich, sweet-tart chocolate dessert (not too sweet though). There’s a tang from the tart cherries, a nutritional antioxidant boost in the acai powder, a little crunch of chocolate chip bits, plenty of nut butter protein, and just the right level of sweetness provided by dates. My kind of snacking!

One word of advice … don’t tell your kids these chocolate balls are good for them and they’ll never know just how nutritious they really are.

No-Bake Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Cherry Chocolate Antioxidant Protein Balls

Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Total Time: 20 Minutes
Chill Time: 10-15 minutes


  • 1 cup brown rice cereal
  • 1/2 cup nut butter - homemade cashew butter
  • 1/2 medium, very ripe banana
  • 4 dates, pitted - I use Medjool
  • 1/4 cup dried, tart cherries
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips - Enjoy Life Dark Chocolate Morsels
  • 2 Tablespoons acai powder
  • 1 Tablespoon flax meal
  • 1 Tablespoon shredded coconut


  • Add all ingredients to a food processor. Pulse or grind until well combined and mixture will hold together when pressed together.
  • Scoop into small balls using a #60 scoop or roll into small walnut-size balls between palms of hands.
  • Place balls on a plate or parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze for 10- 15 minutes.
  • Transfer firm-chilled balls to a plastic baggie and store in freezer or refrigerator.
  • Enjoy as a snack, pre- or post-workout nutritional boost, or any time you want a quick energy bite that’s sure to satisfy the taste buds too.

  3. Can’t do cherries, but these look wonderful. How can I modify?

    • Any other dried fruit would work, if you can do dried fruit (just not cherries). I love subbing cherries with dried blueberries. If you want to skip the dried cherries or other fruit altogether, that is fine too. Dried acai berries would be good in these too. Thanks for the question. Let me know what you use instead of the cherries and how it turns out!
