… The Lighter Side of the Granola Bar World!

Good Bean Chocolate Berry Bar, photo courtesy of TGBThe Good Bean, who came onto the healthy snack scene this past December with their Roasted Chickpeas, is bringing more chickpeas to us … this time in the form of tasty granola bars, which, by the way, made it onto the Huffington Post list of new product food trends at the Fancy Food Show 2012. Being that so many granola bars derive their protein levels from nuts, it’s nice to see a healthy snack option for folks who cannot do nuts.

The Good Bean Fruit & No-Nut Bar is available in three flavor varieties, all of which are gluten free, nut free, and contain no GMO ingredients. They also are free of hexane (a chemical solvent that really has no business being consumed into the human body) and are full of wonderful chickpea fiber (a healthy food), while providing 5g of protein. I need to mention here that each bar also contains soy and dairy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do the taste-testing myself due to my dairy-free requirements, but if these are not an allergen trigger for you, please read on. You’ll want to learn what my taste-testers had to say.

Here are how the flavor profiles and comments stack up for each bar:

Good Bean Apricot Coconut Bar, photo courtesy of TGBApricot Coconut – made with chickpeas (of course), coconut, and bits of white chocolate. “There are little bursts of apricots. The bar doesn’t really taste “sweet”, but seems to satisfy my sweet-tooth. This bar has a chewy texture, but it’s not excessively dense. I like the fact that this bar isn’t too heavy or sweet. It would be a good “light” snack bar.”

Good Bean Chocolate Berry Bar, photo courtesy TGBChocolate Berry – combines chickpeas, dark chocolate, and red & blue berries. “This one has a tart berry flavor. The bar is more solid (compared to the lighter textures of the other two bars.) There is enough chocolate to get a “chocolate fix”, without being overbearing.”

Good Bean Fruit and Seeds Trail Mix Bar, photo courtesy of TGBFruit & Seeds Trail Mix – a mixture of chickpeas, cranberries, and pumpkin seeds. “This bar is a little gooier, not as solid, as the Apricot Coconut bar. See how it easily bends, almost on its own? This bar, maybe because of the pumpkin seeds, leaves a little drier taste in the mouth. I like the pumpkin flavor, but would like to see more cranberries. I like cranberries.”

All of my taste-testers thought more about how to describe the texture and overall “persona” of the bars. They all concluded that they originally thought the bars, since each bar’s foundation is roasted chickpeas, would have more of a “crunchy” characteristic. Their consensus was the texture is more closely compared to that of a rice krispy treat or a rice cake (though not as dry and much more flavorful than a rice cake.) While each of my testers had a different opinion on which bar was a personal favorite, all shared that these bars would be a great go-to snack that could satisfy a craving, without the result of overkill.

For Daily Forage, we are so happy that we were able to gather our taste-testers and poll their opinions. Thanks to all who helped us out! We appreciate your help, your honesty, and your tastebuds!

The Good Bean Fruit & No-Nut Bar will be widely available May 1st, 2012, but until then is available exclusively at Whole Foods. Gather up some of your favorite flavor, or a mixture, and enjoy some healthy snacking.

  2. Thanks for the review, I have one small correction – Chocolate Berry and Apricot Coconut contain dairy, dark and white chocolate respectively. But Trail Mix does not, it’s vegan.
