… A Natural Tummy Soother – And So Much More!

Naturally Gluten-free Lemon Ginger Tummy Tea

Having an upset stomach can be the worst. It seems to stop me in my tracks faster than a cold, headache, or almost anything.

Unfortunately, those of us who are celiac and gluten-free seem to experience more than our fair share of tummy upsets. And to compound the problem, we can’t just turn to the most popular, or even some lesser known, tummy remedies for concern that they might contain gluten and intensify the problem instead of aiding it.

If we’re trying to stay as true to whole food or all natural ingredients as we can, the choices are reduced immensely. As I said, tummy aches are the worst, right?

Lemon Ginger Tummy Tea is what I turn to for all of my tummy issues. I actually depend on this warm tea for so many ailments (which fortunately don’t occur too often for me anymore). This is really not a tea by definition since there are no tea leaves in this recipe or concoction, but the ginger and lemon combination can have natural soothing and healing effects. Migraines and tension headache symptoms often lessen or dissipate from consuming ginger and lemon. This tea also helps to clear sinus congestion and temper a cough from cold or flu. Nasty sore throats are soothed and left less raw and irritated when a spoonful of honey is added to a cup of warm lemon ginger tea.

It might seem counterintuitive to use lemon, which tastes very tart and acidic, to settle a tummy that is already “sour”. But lemon actually reduces gut acidity, while ginger calms it further.

If you’re struggling with an upset tummy, or you’re taking care of someone, perhaps your kiddo, with an angry and sour belly, give my Lemon Ginger Tummy Tea recipe a try. I’ve used it myself, and have fixed it for my kids (who initially were non believers and thought I was reverting to my “hippy days”), for all of the above ailments not just tummy issues – and it has never failed any of us. This recipe is simple to prepare, settles the gut quickly, is naturally gluten-free, and takes only two ingredients that you most likely have in your kitchen on a regular basis. Oh, and it costs pennies per cupful.

I almost forgot to mention that Lemon Ginger Tummy Tea is also delicious and makes a great morning detox tea. I drink it often, as I shared in my morning routine post, to start my system off just right.

Ingredients

  • 8-12 ounces hot water
  • 1/2 fresh lemon, seeds removed
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

Directions

  • Place hot water in a cup. Squeeze the lemon juice into the water. Add the freshly grated ginger in the cup and stir until lemon and ginger are well blended. Drink and find relief.
  • TIP: To keep fresh ginger on hand, I peel the root by scraping the tip of a spoon along its papery skin, break the peeled pieces into fingers, then wrap each piece in plastic wrap, place them in a plastic baggie, and store them in the freezer. Simply grate with a microplane when grated ginger is called for in a recipe.
