… All in Favor of Combining Cara Caras and Sweet Potatoes, Say, “Aye”!
Have you heard of, or tried, Cara Cara oranges yet? No? Then you’ve gotta run yourself to your closest grocer and look for these now … go, I’ll wait.
Oh, you have heard of them, you’ve even tried them? Then you’ll completely understand when I say that these are my new favorite oranges of all time. Oh yeah! Cara Cara oranges are a variety of navel orange with a pink or red interior, and are much less acidic than common navel oranges. To me, they taste like a cross between a sweet pink grapefruit and a navel orange, while I’ve also heard Cara Cara’s described as having rose or cherry flavor notes to them. I love them because they never cause that high-acid upset tummy feeling, regardless of whether I eat the juicy segments alone or juiced into a refreshing and bright breakfast drink.
Just one medium Cara Cara orange packs a whopping 130% of your RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamin C, and 3 g of fiber.
Navel oranges are available year round, depending on the variety. Cara Cara navel oranges are typically available from November through April, so I have a couple more months to share recipes using my new, sweet, fresh citrus fruit friends with you. As for this juice recipe, the oranges make a delicious, sweet but not overly so, platform for the spinach. And what a great combination is created between the oranges and the sweet potato. I’ve never added sweet potato to my juice recipes before, and I could do a whole post just on the benefits of including this root vegetable. I’ll be using these more often as well. I’ve always loved baked or mashed sweet potatoes – and sweet potato chips, of course. You too? Well, then you’ll probably agree with me that they’re a great addition to this juice. Their tender flesh juices perfectly, without adding a starchy texture. More good news? They are considered a low-glycemic food and the darker flesh (the more purplish-colored ones) have been reported to offer anti-inflammatory properties.
As with all of my juice recipes to date, I made this one with my Hurom Juicer. This one, also as standard practice, is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and meets all vegan and vegetarian requirements. I love foods so pure and fresh, don’t you? Cara Cara Orange, Sweet Potato Juice
Prep time: 5 minutes
Makes: 1 12-ounce serving – easily shared by two
3 Cara Cara navel oranges
2 medium organic carrots
1 ½ medium sweet potatoes
1 ½ cups fresh organic baby spinach
Juice all ingredients according to your juicer’s directions. Stir well to mix flavors. Drink and enjoy!
