… Vegan Margarine … Yay!

Earth Balance Organic Coconut Spread, photo courtesy of Earth Balance“Why am I bringing you a product review of a vegan margarine,” you may be asking, “when this is a gluten-free website?” That’s a great question. And I have two responses. First, many celiacs, and those with gluten intolerance, are also intolerant of dairy. If this is the case for you, implementing a dairy-free approach to your lifestyle can be important and bring favorable results. And as many of you know, we practice a dairy-free lifestyle here, along with eliminating gluten. Second, I take great excitement in sharing with you products that we find truly valuable and make life for the gluten-free-goer, and dairy-free in this case, easier and definitely more delicious.

So what is this vegan (and gluten-free) “margarine” that causes us great excitement? (Can someone really get excited about a margarine? I can!) It is Earth Balance Organic Coconut Spread, created by the same folks who make Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread. If you’re familiar with my recipes, you’ve most likely noticed that I use this spread in all of my regular cooking practices that call for “margarine or butter”. And now I’m incorporating their Coconut Spread into many of my recipes as well.

I was fortunate to receive some “free product” coupons for this Coconut Spread, and I must say, the coupons sat on my desk for a couple of months. I honestly was hesitant to try a coconut product because I’m not a big fan of coconut flavor in my food, with the exception of shredded coconut in my oatmeal cookies that is. But I kept hearing the buzz about this spread. I finally decided that since I love the Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread, I’d better at least give this Coconut Spread a try before sending it to the judge and jury. Well, deliberations were not out for long … this stuff is great!

I started my product review with experimentations in some of my tried and true recipes, like Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cinnamon Rolls (making equal substitutions for the called-for margarine measurements with Organic Coconut Spread instead.) The results were perfect in both cases. Each recipe resulted in excellent performance and taste. In fact, I think both might have been slightly improved. And the concern I had with a coconut flavor being imparted into the recipe did not happen. Though there was an only slightly sweeter flavor, a wonderful complement to the cookies, the essence of coconut wasn’t there. This was a positive attribute in my opinion. The dough for the cinnamon rolls, and my homemade biscuits, were lighter and flakier than the originals. There was a declaration that those were the best biscuits I’ve made since going gluten-free. Loved hearing that! I can’t wait to try it on roasted veggies, or in an Asian stir-fry.

So let’s look at this Coconut Spread’s credentials.

  • Vegan

With such positive results, we’ll be using Earth Balance Organic Coconut Spread in many of our upcoming recipes. Be sure to watch for it. And let us know what you think? We’d love to hear from you!

  1. This product has some natural flavorings in it, so I’m hoping that is to make it taste like butter. Does it taste like butter?

  2. This Coconut Spread, while it doesn’t really have a pronounced coconut flavor, doesn’t have a “butter” flavor either. It performs in cooking just like butter, but I don’t think I would spread it on toast for a buttery sensation. It would give a creamy texture, but not really a buttery flavor.

  3. Although it kent have a buttery flavor, it spreads like butter on toast and, in my opinion, tastes better than butter. The mild sweeter flavor goes great with last and breads.

  4. Since I tasted coconut spread – margarine or butter for toasted bread just fell off my radar . Coconut spread is the winner. Healthier than margarine or butter and has the added taste of coconut that makes toast a new treat!

  5. Hi Neil! Doesn’t it add a great flavor? I agree! And baking with it results in a nice texture too! Thanks for sharing:-D
